Dutch Corner History Group

First, notice that I spelled "Openheimer"so that it might be pronounced the way the "natives" pronounce it.

Second, I would like to point out that on maps the word "Oppenheimer" is placed where the Helsel School was. The Oppenheimer family never owned that spot. The map-makers, I assume, were doing the best that they could, but here they missed it.

If you look at the map, Dutch Corner is also not quite right. It's listed as one small place, instead of a larger area. They also have "Dunning Cove" on there. (I know I've never heard the corner called that, and neither has Dad....I wonder if someone just wanted to call it something other than Dutch Corner and wanted to name something else after James Dunning other than Dunning's Creek) I wonder where they got their information from when they made the maps...if they followed older maps, or if they just "guesstimated".

I am not sure that we will ever know the answers to those questions. In the case of /openheimer/ the map makers clearly did not have a clue.

Related to that subject, I bet one could construct an entire map of REALLY local names for places -- like "Hengst Hollow" and "Kaufman Hollow". The hill just south of where I live was known as "Jew Hill" up until about the 1980's. This, of course, was because the Openheimers owned it and they were Jewish. Is "Sellers Ridge" on any maps?

Not that I know of. It would be an interesting project. It could also be helpful for genealogical research, since they were mostly named for local families. Croyle's Cove was on some of the older maps, but not on any of the newer maps.

Maybe we shoudl make a list of the place names like those and where they were located, then we can plot them on a map. I think what they're calling "Dunning Cove" on the map was "Croyle's Cove", though it may be just the area where Clyde Dibert lived. It was also called Golden...something. I can't remember. I'll have to look that up again.

"Seller's Ridge" may not go back that far. It was called that because of John Sellers. The Hershbergers called it that.
