When I go to cemeteries to do research I take a bottle of water with me. If I come across a hard to read tombstone, I wet it down by spraying a mist of water over it. It does two things.. it cleans the dirt off and changes the contrast of any etches which makes it easier to read. I don't have any before and after photos, but next time I do this, I'll take some photos.
