When I was a child my grandfather would take me to dutch couner to see the walter cemetery. He was one of the people who collected money to have the stone put on the hill. I am glad to see someone knows where it is and that it is still there. I have told other people about it and they thought I was nuts. thank you for taking care of it |

I am interested in the Joseph Walter tombstone in the Walter's cemetery. Barn11 stated that his grandfather collected money for the stone. Who was Barn11's grandfather and when was the stone placed. Are there any descendant's of the Walter family who are member of the Dutch Corner group? Carol Bickel |

I moved this post to Dutch Corner places, as it seemed to fit better than the Welcome topic! On a side note, we recently were given some old documents from a Dutch Corner family, and among the papers was an Indenture between Jacob Iler and George Michael Imler and Jacob Saylor, the latter two who were executors of Mathias Walter's estate. It's dated July 31, 1792. While it was created after Mathias died, it does list his children. Hopefully I'll get it out on the website soon. I had to scan it in seperate parts and am putting them together in a photo editing program so that it looks like it should. |

Thank you for thinking of me when you found the document. I, too had found that very unusual deed (Deed Book C page 608) at the Bedford County Courthouse a few years ago. It involves a section of warranted land in Dutch Corner that Alexander Rogers acquired in 1762. (Bill Bowser has plotted the Rogers' land.) Later that property was to sold to William Coxe and then to Jacob Iler. The thing that makes this odd is that the executors of Mathias Walter's will bought that land "in trust" for Mathias Walter' children in 1792, ten years after Mathias died and when some of the children were already adults! On my last visit to the courthouse I had Faith Zembower look at the deed but neither of us could figure what exactly was happening. I am glad that you are posting it to the site. Maybe someone can help interpret the meaning and intent of the deed. Where did your copy of the deed come from? Was it with any related material? Maybe that would give a clue. I don't know if any are members of your group . Only know that the Walter association collected money for stone when I was a kid. Some 55 years ago. I did find where the stone is. Connie Claycomb showed me where it was. She is also a decend of Walters |

There are quite a number of Walter descendants still living in Dutch Corner. Sadly, we don't know who all was buried there other than Jacob. It does appear that there were multiple graves there however. We've cleaned it up, and you can see the sign that our group put up there next to the tombstone you mentioned below. I wish we actually knew who all were buried there. Of course, same with Barley Cemetery, Heltzel Cemetery and many other farm cemeteries in Dutch Corner. |
